From Groundbreaking to Career Success: Keweenaw Community Foundation’s Home Building Project Provides Hands-On Learning Opportunities for Students

Keweenaw Community Foundation Assists CTE Construction & Technology Students in Building a Home

The Keweenaw Community Foundation recently granted $5,000 in funding to the Copper Country ISD Career and Technical Education (CTE) programs. The funds came from the Herman Gundlach Fund and Funding Youth Initiatives, and were used to support the CTE Construction Technology program and the Home Building Project.

Construction Technology students will have the opportunity to work on building a home from scratch, with assistance from local contractors and businesses already involved in the project. This hands-on experience will help them develop important technical skills that they can use in their future careers. In addition to Construction Technology students, students from the CTE Graphic Arts and Marketing and Business and Entrepreneurship programs will also be involved in the later stages of the project. They will create informational signage and work with real estate agents to learn about selling a home.

The Home Building Project aims to increase the local housing stock in the community while providing valuable learning experiences for students. Throughout the project, students will develop important financial skills that they can use in their future careers. Keweenaw Community Foundation Executive Director Robin Mennguzzo emphasizes the importance of this project in allowing students to contribute to their community while developing skills necessary for their future success. CTE Director Corey Soumis shares this sentiment, highlighting that the program’s goal is to enhance students’ skills for their future careers by seeking out projects that benefit both students and their community. Overall, this project serves as a model of community collaboration to address challenges and support community needs.
