At just 21 years old, Lexi was living life to the fullest when she discovered the need for surgery to remove a life-threatening vascular tumor located near the back of her brain. Following a successful 10-hour operation in August, she found herself struggling to speak after being placed on a breathing tube during her recovery.
Months after the surgery, Lexi continued to have difficulties speaking, barely managing to utter a simple “hello” to those around her. While the tumor had been removed and her life saved, her ability to speak was compromised. Fortunately, doctors from Rhode Island’s Lifespan Hospital group introduced her to an AI program known as OpenAI to help restore her voice.
Through OpenAI’s Voice Engine technology, Lexi was able to regain her voice by recording a 15-second cooking tutorial video she had made for a high school project. This voice-cloning technology allowed her to type phrases into a custom app and hear them spoken in an audio clip using her own voice. With this technology, Lexi can now communicate by typing messages into the OpenAI app, which then generates audio clips in her voice. Whether ordering at a drive-thru or simply expressing laughter with a “ha ha,” the AI-generated voice recordings sound remarkably realistic, providing Lexi with a sense of normalcy in her communication abilities.
