Cornhole, once a simple backyard game, has transformed into a competitive professional sport in recent years. In Colorado, two American Cornhole League (ACL) pros call the state home, including Yetty Irwan from Fort Collins. Unlike many other players, Irwan didn’t grow up playing games like cornhole; instead, she came to the United States as an exchange student and studied experimental pathology before becoming a scientist.
Despite her lack of experience with the sport, Irwan’s husband set up a board in their basement seven years ago, sparking her interest. In 2019, she became eligible to go pro with the ACL and now has sponsors that help pay for travel to tournaments around the country. But Irwan isn’t just focused on winning; she’s also passionate about growing the sport. She helps younger players like Colt Kenner, a 10-year-old making a name for himself on the local circuit.
In fact, this year two Colorado high school students received college scholarships for cornhole thanks to Irwan’s efforts. She wants to help beginners improve their game and has even spread the sport globally, including back to her home country of Indonesia where cornhole is now being played.
Irwan’s journey from science career to professional cornhole player is a unique story that showcases the growth and popularity of the sport both locally and internationally.
