Global Inequality: Women’s Economic Disadvantage in 93 Countries

In 93 countries, women are legally entitled to pay less for doing the same job as a man, which is just one of the many ways in which gender equality is denied. These inequities have a significant impact on not only women but also their children, families, and communities. The United Nations estimates that closing the gender gap in pay and other areas such as access to loans and capital could give the global economy a $7 trillion boost.

The importance of achieving gender equality in all aspects of life was highlighted this week at meetings hosted by the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C., attended by world leaders. One advocate for a fairer economic system is Melinda French Gates, co-chair of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation and supporter of “NewsHour.” In an interview on “NewsHour,” she discussed these issues and emphasized the need to raise awareness and take action to address these disparities for the betterment of society as a whole.
