Greater Akron-Canton High School Sports Awards Show Celebrates Top Tennis and Track Stars of the Year

Bucher and Cernansky named Athletes of the Year at Greater Akron-Canton High School Sports Awards

The Greater Akron-Canton High School Sports Awards show recognized Tess Bucher as the Overall Girls Athlete of the Year and Colin Cernansky as the Overall Boys Athlete of the Year. The event celebrated athletes, coaches, and teams from the area with a total of 37 awards presented. Sponsors supporting the event included Meijer, Planet Fitness, SARTA, USA Today Sports, and Golfweek.

Tess Bucher had an exceptional four-year career dominating Northeast Ohio tennis. She ended her senior year with a perfect 43-0 record and totaled 151 wins overall – the most by any player in Stark County history. Throughout 2023, she only lost 3 sets, showcasing her incredible skill and determination. Bucher achieved league, sectional, and district titles all four years and will continue her tennis career at the University of Kentucky after a standout high school journey that included success in softball as well.

Colin Cernansky concluded his impressive running career at Marlington High School with remarkable achievements. He led his team to a third consecutive team state championship in cross country and secured individual state titles in track. With wins in the 1,600 and 3,200 meters, he set all-time Stark County records in these events. His outstanding performances led to six outdoor state titles, three indoor state titles, and a cross country state championship, elevating him to one of the most celebrated high school athletes in Stark County history. Cernansky will continue his running career at Ohio State University.

The Greater Akron-Canton High School Sports Awards show is part of the USA TODAY High School Sports Awards program, recognized as the largest high school sports recognition initiative in the country. This event highlights the exceptional talents and achievements of high school athletes in the Greater Akron-Canton area.
