As a result of the devastating forest fires on Rhodes Island in 2023, the Greek government has fulfilled its commitment to offer hotel vouchers to those who were forced to cancel their vacations. Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis had announced nine months earlier that anyone affected by the fires would receive a week of free vacation in 2024. The Ministry of Tourism has now established the legal framework for distributing hotel vouchers to more than 25,000 affected individuals. The vouchers, worth up to €500, will be given based on the original cost of accommodation during the canceled trip.
The voucher distribution process has begun as promised by the Prime Minister, and over 5,000 people have already claimed them. The vouchers can only be used for hotel stays and not for private holiday apartments like Airbnb. This initiative is unique as Greece is the first country in the world to implement such a program. According to Myron Flouris, Secretary General in the Greek Ministry of Tourism, all those evacuated from affected areas in Rhodes are entitled to state-paid leave, with many of the affected individuals being British citizens.
