Hanoi Heart Hospital Saves Woman’s Life After Coma Due to Circulation Failure

Attempting to revive a person whose heart stopped during a two-month wait for surgery

A woman who was 39 years old and awaiting heart surgery suddenly went into a coma due to a circulation failure. Fortunately, a doctor at Hanoi Heart Hospital was able to save her life. In late February, the woman had symptoms of tiredness, coughing, and left arm pain. After a hospital near her home diagnosed her with moderate heart valve regurgitation, she took medication but did not see improvement.

Upon further examination at Hanoi Heart Hospital, she was diagnosed with severe mitral and tricuspid regurgitation, heart failure, infective endocarditis, and pulmonary hypertension. The hospital staff worked quickly to resuscitate her when her condition worsened rapidly and led to a cardiac and respiratory arrest in early April. Although her heart started beating again, she fell into a deep coma.

Doctors at the hospital worked tirelessly to stabilize her condition by filtering her blood, administering antibiotics, and lowering her body temperature. After a day of intensive care treatment, it was discovered that she had suffered hypoxia in the cerebral hemispheres and caudate nucleus on both sides. Despite facing complications such as heart failure that was difficult to manage, the woman eventually regained consciousness and was deemed ready for urgent heart surgery in June.

The surgery successfully performed with good progress in recovery of the patient. Infective endocarditis, a serious infection of the heart’s inner lining and valves caused by bacteria from an infected tooth abscess or dental procedure that spread through the bloodstream into the heart’s chambers were the cause of her health issues. The director of Hanoi Heart Hospital emphasized that this case required a lot of effort and precision from their medical team since infective endocarditis can be challenging to treat even after leaving the hospital.

The successful recovery serves as proof of the dedication and expertise of healthcare professionals involved in treating this woman’s critical condition. It is an excellent reminder that early diagnosis is crucial for timely treatment of any medical issue affecting our bodies’ vital organs like the heart.
