Health Systems on a Mergers and Acquisitions Spree: A Look at the Latest Deals

As 2024 approaches, several large health systems are actively acquiring hospitals to expand their reach and improve patient care. In March, Adventist Health in Roseville, California purchased two hospitals from Tenet for $550 million. Dartmouth Health in Lebanon, New Hampshire negotiated terms with the state Attorney General to acquire Valley Regional Hospital in Claremont in April.

HCA Healthcare’s subsidiary Medical City Healthcare in Dallas acquired Trinity Regional Hospital Sachse (Texas) from Sunland Medical Foundation in February. Kaiser Permanente expanded its footprint by acquiring Geisinger Health in Danville, Pennsylvania through its Risant Health division in March.

Mercy, a health system in St. Louis, revealed plans to acquire Ascension Via Christi Hospital in Pittsburg, Kansas in February and completed the acquisition of SoutheastHealth in Cape Girardeau, Missouri in January. Novant Health acquired two hospitals from Community Health System for $320 million and three South Carolina hospitals from Tenet for $2.4 billion.

UCI Health finalized the $975 million acquisition of four Southern California hospitals from Tenet in March while UCLA Health purchased West Hills Hospital and Medical Center from HCA for $316 million in March.
