Horry County Couple Fights Against Overdevelopment on McDowell Shortcut Road

A couple who owns a farm and small business off McDowell Shortcut Road in Murrells Inlet are speaking out against a proposed 80-acre development that would see 100 homes built across from Ranch Haven Drive near Highway 707. This area used to be quiet farmland, but today, the residents are facing issues of flooding, traffic, and what they feel is overdevelopment.

Kristen and John Owens have been living on McDowell Shortcut Road since 2005 and have witnessed significant development in the area over the years. They purchased their 11-acre property in 2018 with a commitment to keeping it as a working farm. However, they are concerned about the impact of the proposed development on the area’s infrastructure, traffic congestion, and flooding risks. With the road already at 95% capacity and schools overenrolled, the couple worries about the consequences of further development.

The Owens also raise concerns about the speeding problem on McDowell Shortcut Road and worry about the safety of their animals, including miniature and full-size horses, in the face of increased traffic and development. They urge Horry County leaders to reconsider the proposed project and think about the future generations who will be affected by such decisions.

The planning commission is set to make its recommendation on July 11, and some officials anticipate the project will face strong opposition. The Owens are adamant that enough is enough and that it’s time to preserve what remains of the area for future enjoyment.
