Hungarian Duo Defy Odds to Win Mixed Relay Title at Modern Pentathlon World Cup

Michelle Gulyas and Balazs Szep from Hungary secured the mixed relay title at the UIPM Modern Pentathlon World Cup Final 2024 in Ankara, Turkey. Their victory came just one day after Csaba Bohm won the men’s title for Hungary. The Hungarian pair finished with a total of 1381 points, narrowly beating Egypt (1372) and the Republic of Korea (1341) who came in second and third respectively.

Gulyas and Szep were outstanding throughout the competition, winning multiple events. In fencing, they had 27 victories, finishing second behind their closest competitors from Egypt. They then took the lead after the swimming leg, recording a time of 1:57.94 which was faster than any other competitor. During the riding round, they earned 293 points, just four points behind Egypt who had the highest score in that event.

However, it was during the laser run where Gulyas and Szep truly shone. They finished in third place with a time of 12:53.00, narrowly beating Egypt’s Salma Abdelmaksoud and Ahmed Hamed who came in second place with a time of 12:41.20. Despite their strong performance, Hungary maintained their lead to secure victory over their closest competitors from Egypt.
