India secured their spot in the Super Eight stage of the T20 World Cup on Wednesday with a win over the United States. The U.S., ranked second in Group A, will have a chance to qualify for the next round if they defeat Ireland on Friday.
India’s win was thanks to Suryakumar Yadav’s fifty and Arshdeep Singh’s four-wicket haul. Yadav’s unbeaten 50 and Shivam Dube’s 31 not out stabilized India after they lost Virat Kohli and captain Rohit Sharma cheaply. Rishabh Pant was also dismissed early on, putting more pressure on India.
However, Yadav’s crucial partnership of 72 runs helped guide India to victory with ten balls to spare. The U.S.’s struggles with the bat were evident as key players like Shayan Jahangir and Andries Gous got dismissed early on, despite Steven Taylor’s valiant effort in scoring 24 runs before being dismissed by Axar Patel. Nitish Kumar was their top scorer with only 27 runs.
India will now face Canada in their last group stage match on Saturday, while the U.S.’s fate is still uncertain as they must defeat Ireland to make it through to the next round.
