Injury Forces Retirement of Andy Murray in Second Round at Queen’s: The Struggle of a Champion on the Brink of Major Tournaments

Andy Murray played his 1,001st career match in the second round against Jordan Thompson at Queen’s, but was forced to retire due to injury. The three-time Grand Slam champion decided to end the match when he was trailing 4-1 in the first set against Thompson. Despite the setback at Queen’s, Murray remains hopeful that he will be able to compete in Wimbledon.

Murray is now scheduled to undergo a back procedure on Saturday, just nine days before Wimbledon begins on 1 July. His brother, Jamie Murray, shared that Andy saw a specialist to determine the next steps in his recovery. In addition to Murray, fellow Briton Dan Evans also faced injury troubles at Queen’s, retiring with a knee injury during his match against Brandon Nakashima.

Murray had previously undergone a hip resurfacing operation in 2019 and faced setbacks with ankle ligaments and a recurring back problem leading up to Wimbledon. With the Olympics also beginning next month, Murray is in a race against time to recover for the upcoming major tournaments.
