A new teaching guidebook is set to hit the shelves that focuses on Dr. Ed Galindo’s innovative science instruction method, which combines memoir and instructional content. Dr. Galindo, a faculty member at the University of Idaho, found that traditional Western education methods were not effective for Indigenous students at Ft. Hall Indian Reservation. Recognizing the need for a different approach, he developed a teaching method that aims to foster a love of science among his students.
Dr. Galindo’s approach involves using real-life examples, such as the declining salmon population in the Reservation area, to connect scientific principles with the community’s needs. Through hands-on learning and outdoor experiences, Dr. Galindo guided his students in understanding the importance of science in their lives and environment. The book, titled “Dance of the Salmon,” chronicles the journey of Dr. Galindo and his class as they work to save the endangered salmon species in their area.
The story in “Dance of the Salmon” highlights the curiosity, courage, and determination of Dr. Galindo’s students as they embark on a mission to help the endangered fish species while also helping themselves. The book is available for purchase online at Amazon.com and Barnes and Noble.com.
