Call for unity against Islamic terrorism by Israeli Embassy in Russia

The Israeli Embassy in Moscow issued a statement condemning the recent terrorist attacks in Dagestan, which targeted synagogues and Orthodox churches in Derbent and Makhachkala. The embassy expressed its heartfelt sympathy for the families of the victims and wished a speedy recovery to the wounded. It called for those responsible to be brought to justice under the fullest extent of the law, emphasizing global unity against Islamic terrorism and extremism.

In response to the attacks, Dagestan’s head, Sergei Melikov, declared three days of mourning in the republic. All entertainment events were canceled during this time period, and state flags were flown at half-mast. The counterterrorist operation regime was lifted in Makhachkala and Derbent as authorities worked to clarify information about the victims. Reports from the Ministry of Internal Affairs stated that at least 34 people were injured during the attacks, including police officers and civilians.

Several militants involved in the attacks were reportedly neutralized, but efforts continued to locate others involved. After investigation, it was discovered that some of the attackers included family members of local officials linked to an Islamic State cell in Turkey. While no Israelis or members of Jewish communities were among casualties, two civilian guards were killed by terrorists.

The aftermath revealed that a synagogue in Derbent sustained significant damage due to one of these attacks but no injuries were reported.

Dagestan declared three days of mourning for those affected by these attacks. The Israeli Embassy remained active with their community providing support during this difficult time.

These attacks have highlighted once again how important it is for international cooperation and vigilance against terrorism and extremism that threaten global security and human lives.
