Jerusalem Riots Trigger Tension; Istanbul Elections Lean Towards Opposition Candidates; Ankara Race Too Close to Call: A Look at the Latest Developments in Turkish Politics and Society

The recent riots in Jerusalem have sparked tension in the city, with bonfires being lit on the Begin road and an olive branch being activated. In response to the growing unrest, Gantz has appealed to the Speaker of the Knesset to cancel the recess in order to address the situation.

In Istanbul, Ekram Imamulu of the Republican People’s Party is currently leading with at least 50 percent of the votes after counting 60 percent of the ballot boxes. This puts him on track for a second term in office, much to the disappointment of Murat Korum, candidate of the ruling Justice and Development Party. If Imamoglu’s victory is confirmed, it will be a significant setback for Erdogan, who had hoped to regain control of the city. Imamoglu’s popularity and broad appeal across different groups make him a formidable opponent and potentially a key player in the 2028 presidential election.

In Ankara, Mansur Yabash is also currently leading with over 58 percent of the votes counted so far. The results so far indicate a close fight between the two major parties at the national level, with the opposition party slightly ahead.
