Kaiser Permanente’s Partnership with MSU Denver Tackles Mental Health Professional Shortage in Colorado

The mental health crisis in the United States has led to an increasing demand for mental health professionals. In response to this, Kaiser Permanente has partnered with MSU Denver and other collaborators to address the shortage of mental health professionals in Colorado. The initiative has allocated $4.2 million in grants to support students in bridging the gap between completing their degrees and becoming licensed professionals.

One of the main challenges faced by students pursuing careers in mental health is acquiring the necessary clinical hours. This can be a significant obstacle for many students, especially those who are underrepresented in the industry. To address this issue, MSU Denver is leading an accelerator program that helps students secure clinical hour placements, receive supervision for pre- and post-master’s associates, and access study materials essential for licensure.

Another challenge faced by mental health students is covering the costs of study materials and testing. This can be particularly difficult for those who come from low-income backgrounds or who are facing financial hardship. To help alleviate this issue, Kaiser Permanente has provided funding for scholarships and stipends to support students as they work towards obtaining their degree and license.

The goal of Kaiser Permanente’s initiative is to improve the health of the communities they serve, particularly in response to the local impacts of the national mental health crisis. They aim to develop a mental health workforce that is representative of the communities most affected by mental health challenges. According to Emily Matuszewicz, director of development and partnerships at MSU Denver, one in five Coloradans is in need of mental health services, with the state experiencing an increase in depression, anxiety, overdoses, and suicide.

The Colorado Behavioral Health Administration reported a higher number of mental health job vacancies compared to other states, emphasizing the urgent need for mental health professionals in the region. Students pursuing careers in mental health often face obstacles such as lack of social networks in the industry, especially among underrepresented groups. However, with initiatives like this one from Kaiser Permanente and MSU Denver, these barriers are being addressed head-on.

Dr. Jeff Krawcek, executive medical director and president of Kaiser Permanente Colorado’s medical group emphasized that removing barriers for individuals pursuing careers in mental health is crucial to meet healthcare needs across diverse communities throughout Colorado.

Overall, Kaiser Permanente’s partnership with MSU Denver represents an important step towards addressing the shortage of mental health professionals in Colorado while also ensuring that future generations have access to high-quality care when they need it most
