Legendary Healthcare Leader and Advocate Dr. Herbert Pardes Dies at 89.

Herbert Pardes, M.D., a prominent figure in the healthcare industry and a strong advocate for academic medicine, medical research, and children’s health education, passed away this week at the age of 89 after battling an illness. Throughout his extensive career, he made significant contributions to the field and held various leadership roles, including serving as the president and CEO of NewYork-Presbyterian for 11 years.

Pardes’ influence extended beyond his role at NewYork-Presbyterian as he held positions such as director of the National Institute of Mental Health and U.S. Assistant Surgeon General during the Carter and Reagan administrations. He also served as president of the American Psychiatric Association and was involved in various health policy commissions. In addition to his government and professional roles, Pardes was actively involved in leading healthcare associations such as the Association of American Medical Colleges and the Healthcare Association of New York State.

Last year, Pardes was honored with induction into the Health Care Hall of Fame in recognition of his significant contributions to the healthcare industry. His legacy lives on through the lives he touched and the advancements he made in healthcare and medical research. AHA President and CEO Rick Pollack praised Pardes for his compassionate leadership and dedication to putting patients first, emphasizing that Pardes’ influence extended far beyond his time at NewYork-Presbyterian.
