Manchester United midfielder Kobbie Mainoo has caught the attention of journalist Sam Wallace, who believes that starting him for England would go against manager Gareth Southgate’s instincts. Mainoo, who is only 19 years old, came on as a substitute at half-time in England’s final group game against Slovenia. This was the second time he was brought on during Euro 2024, and his performance has led to calls for him to start the next match.
During an interview with BBC Radio 5 Live Breakfast, Wallace explained that Southgate is naturally a cautious manager, which is why he tends to choose defensive midfielders like Conor Gallagher. However, Wallace believes that Mainoo, who is more of an attacking player, deserves a start based on his performance. Despite playing only a half, Mainoo was instrumental in the game, coming in second to defender Marc Guehi for possession won and joint third for total duels alongside striker Harry Kane.
Mainoo’s potential career as a number eight player may also be contributing to this debate. While Southgate may prefer defensive players like Gallagher in his lineup, Wallace believes that Mainoo’s talent and potential warrant giving him a chance to prove himself in this position. Ultimately, it remains to be seen whether Southgate will follow Wallace’s advice or stick with his usual choices when selecting players for the national team.
