Maximizing Disaster Management Capabilities: Mexican Space Agency Provides Training on Satellite Technology Usage in Guerrero

The Mexican Space Agency (AEM) has continued its support for the State of Guerrero by providing training in the use of satellite technologies. Salvador Landeros Ayala, the general director of AEM, emphasized the importance of satellite technologies in all aspects of disaster management, from prevention to reconstruction. Participants in the training received instruction on Remote Sensing and Earth Observation Programs, as well as how to download, visualize, and process optical and radar satellite images using specialized software like Sentinel Application Platform (SNAP) and Quantum Geographic Information System (QGIS). Representatives from the Guerrero Council, the Secretariat of Integral Risk Management and Civil Protection, and the Secretariat of Environment and Natural Resources of the Government of Guerrero took part in the training.

The Mexican Space Agency (AEM) has provided ongoing support for Guerrero by offering training on satellite technology usage. This assistance is crucial for disaster management in various aspects including prevention and reconstruction. A team was trained to operate “Early Warning and Humanitarian Aid System for the State of Guerrero” under the project “Guerrero in Space.” During this training session, participants received instructions on remote sensing programs as well as techniques to download, visualize, process optical and radar satellite images with specialized software such as SNAP and QGIS.

Representatives from key organizations such as the Guerrero Council, Integral Risk Management & Civil Protection Secretariat, Environment & Natural Resources Secretariat from Government of Guerrero participated along with academics from Autonomous University of Guerrero (UAGro) and National Technological Institute Mexico – Acapulco Campus (TecNMx). These professionals were trained to enhance their skills using satellite technology for disaster preparedness response.

Furthermore, a previous course held by AEM collaborating with Universidad Autónoma del Estado de México trained specialists who are now equipped to integrate satellites into developing First Nanosatellite AtlaCom-1. This ongoing support will improve Guerrero’s capabilities in utilizing satellite technology for disaster management purposes.

Overall, this collaboration between AEM and other institutions highlights Mexico’s commitment towards enhancing disaster preparedness through advanced technology utilization.
