Matteo Berrettini suffered a defeat in the first round of the ATP Masters 1000 in Monte Carlo against Serbian player Miomir Kecmanovic. Despite coming off a win at the ATP tournament in Marrakech, Berrettini was unable to secure a victory and lost 6-3, 6-1 in 1h13′. However, there is a silver lining for Berrettini as he will receive a wild card entry into the main draw of the Italian Internationals in Rome from 6 to 19 May. This news was confirmed by the president of the Italian Tennis and Padel Federation, Angelo Binaghi, during an interview on Rai 1.
Berrettini has previously participated in his home tournament five times, with his best result being a quarter-final appearance in 2020. He has a record of 7 wins and 5 losses at the event. Along with Berrettini, Fabio Fognini will also receive a wild card entry into the Italian Internationals, joining seven other Italian players who have secured a place in the main draw through their rankings.
In other news, Novak Djokovic had a problem-free debut in Monte Carlo, defeating Roman Safiullin 6-1, 6-2 in 1h11′ in the second round of the tournament. Djokovic, the world number 1, continues his strong performance on the ATP tour.
