Meta Ditches ‘Made with AI’ Label, Introduces New AI Information Tag for Clearer Image Transparency.

Meta changes the label from ‘AI-powered’ to ‘AI Insights’ for more detailed information on image content

In recent news, Meta, the social media giant led by Mark Zuckerberg, has made a change to its labeling of images that have been created or edited with Artificial Intelligence (AI). The company announced this initiative in February to improve transparency and provide more information to users.

Initially, images generated or edited with AI were labeled as ‘Made with AI.’ However, this label applied to both images created entirely with AI and those that received some editing using AI tools. Some professional photographers expressed concerns about the labeling, stating that even minor AI-based edits resulted in the ‘Made with AI’ tag, leading to misunderstandings.

To address these concerns, Meta has decided to change the label from ‘Made with AI’ to ‘AI Information.’ This new tag aims to provide users with more information about how AI has been employed in an image. By clicking on the tag, users can learn about the extent of AI use in the content and the reasons behind the labeling. The company has also updated its website to clarify that previous labels did not always meet users’ expectations and provide sufficient context.

Meta uses industry-standard indicators to determine if content has been created with AI. If an image meets these criteria, it is labeled ‘Made with AI.’ However, the company acknowledges that some labeled content includes only minor edits made using AI tools. To clear up any confusion regarding labeling, Meta has introduced the ‘AI Information’ tag to provide users with detailed information about the use of AI in creating or editing an image.

The change in labeling is expected to improve transparency on social networks like Facebook, Instagram, and Threads by providing more details about how technology is being used and whether it involves minor modifications or significant changes.
