Mexico Returns Diplomats from Ecuador Amid Tensions: A Call for Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution

Following the breakdown of diplomatic relations with Ecuador after the assault on the Mexican Embassy in Quito, Mexico has announced that its diplomatic staff have returned to Mexico through a commercial flight supported by friendly embassies. The Mexican Foreign Minister, Alicia Bárcena, emphasized that Mexico will always ensure the safety and respect the rights of its diplomatic staff.

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador expressed gratitude for the messages of solidarity received from leaders, organizations, and countries in response to what he called a “painful matter.” Meanwhile, the Secretary General of the Organization of American States (OAS), Luis Almagro, called for dialogue and announced plans to convene a meeting of the organization’s Permanent Council to address tensions between Mexico and Ecuador.

The president of the Mexican Senate, Ana Lilia Rivera, stressed the importance of Ecuadorian authorities upholding their responsibility to safeguard the Mexican embassy, its assets, and archives in accordance with the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations. Rivera urged for dialogue and peaceful resolution of disputes to overcome the diplomatic crisis.
