Mexico Slams US and Canada for Ambiguous Position on Ecuador Embassy Attack

AMLO criticizes US and Canada for indecisive stance in Ecuador conflict

On Tuesday, Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador accused the United States and Canada of taking an ambiguous position regarding the assault on the Mexican Embassy in Quito by the Ecuadorian government last Friday. In a press conference, he criticized their lack of clear statements and expressed disappointment that President Joe Biden and Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had not personally addressed the issue.

López Obrador called on Biden and Trudeau to speak openly about the incident, emphasizing the need to address authoritarian acts and maintain clear relations with countries like Ecuador. He expressed concern about the tolerance of authoritarian rulers in the region and emphasized the importance of speaking out against such actions.

The Mexican Foreign Ministry had reported receiving support from 29 countries and 8 international organizations following the embassy raid. However, López Obrador criticized the responses from the United States and Canada, stating that they failed to condemn the invasion and assault on the embassy.

Mexico’s Foreign Minister also highlighted that despite their strong condemnation of authoritarian behavior, many countries remained silent or took a neutral stance on the issue. López Obrador stressed that Mexico would continue to speak out against such actions and work towards building a more democratic region.
