Mexico Takes Ecuador to International Court of Justice over Police Attack on Embassy

Mexico is taking Ecuador to the International Court of Justice on Monday to report violations of International Law following the police attack on the Mexican Embassy in Quito in connection to the arrest of former Ecuadorian vice president Jorge Glas. The Mexican Foreign Minister, Alicia Bárcena, announced in a press conference that her country will also bring the matter to multilateral organizations to condemn Ecuador’s actions, which led to the breakdown of diplomatic relations between the two nations.

In response, Mexico severed diplomatic ties with Ecuador, leading to the permanent closure of the Mexican Embassy in Quito. The diplomats returned to Mexico with their heads held high, escorted by embassies including Germany, Panama, Cuba, and Honduras. The Mexican ambassador to Ecuador and the Foreign Minister emphasized the honor of representing Mexico abroad and recognized the support provided to nearly 1,600 Mexicans in Ecuador through the Registration System for Mexican Persons Abroad.

The Foreign Minister highlighted unity among Mexican political parties in defending the nation in the face of this regrettable event.
