Microsoft has unveiled a new wireless controller called Proteus, which is designed to promote accessibility and cater to the needs of people with special needs. The controller can be used for both Xbox and PC gaming and features a modular design developed in collaboration with ByoWave, offering a kit with “infinite configurations” that can be customized based on the players’ needs.
The Proteus controller uses a ‘snap and play’ format, allowing users to easily connect different modules to personalize their gaming experience. Each peripheral module has its own memory, remembering the assigned function during gameplay. The kit includes various buttons, triggers, and interchangeable peripherals, including two analog cubes with Hall effect sensors.
Proteus can be configured as a traditional joystick or placed flat on a desk like a mouse. Users can also change the LED color to any RGB value and adjust the brightness. The controller is compatible with Xbox platforms but not with PlayStation 5 or Nintendo Switch. Proteus is available for pre-order on the ByoWave website for $255 and is expected to ship in the fall.
