NASCAR’s Kyle Larson Makes an Impressive Debut in Indianapolis and Faces Challenges in Pursuing ‘The Double’

Kyle Larson faced numerous challenges during his attempt at “The Double” at the Indianapolis 500 and Charlotte Motor Speedway, but he still managed to lead laps and finish 18th in his first Indy 500. Despite spinning tires early in the race and receiving a pit-road speeding penalty that put him a lap down, Larson fought his way back to the front and briefly held the lead before having to pit again.

Despite these setbacks, Larson found himself leading the race with just 21 laps to go after staying out as other leaders pitted. However, he had to eventually pit, relinquishing the lead to Josef Newgarden, who went on to win the race. Pato O’Ward finished second.

Unfortunately, due to delays caused by inclement weather at Indianapolis, Larson was unable to make it to Charlotte Motor Speedway in time for the Coca-Cola 600. This ended his bid at completing “The Double” and also meant that he would need a waiver from NASCAR to remain eligible for the 2024 NASCAR Playoffs. Drivers typically must start all points races to qualify, but the NASCAR Rule Book does allow for waivers in extenuating circumstances. Larson’s situation will need to be reviewed by the sanctioning body before a decision is made on whether or not he will be eligible for future playoff races.

Despite missing out on completing “The Double,” Larson’s performance in his first Indy 500 was impressive, and he will look to continue his success in the NASCAR Cup Series as the season progresses.
