The NFL has been considering expanding its regular season schedule to 18 games over 18 weeks for several years now. While there have been discussions about this topic during the offseason, New York Giants co-owner John Mara has expressed his reservations about the idea. Mara cited concerns about player fatigue and wear and tear as reasons why further talks with the players union are necessary.
However, it is important to note that Mara may be in the minority on this issue from a business standpoint. An extended schedule would bring in more revenue for both teams and the league. Despite his concerns, Mara acknowledged that an 18-game schedule could potentially benefit the team’s bottom line.
The Giants have experienced a high number of injuries in recent years, which could explain why Mara is particularly wary of the potential drawbacks of an 18-game schedule. If an extended season does happen, it could involve starting the season a week earlier or reducing the preseason to two weeks or adding an additional week to the schedule. If no changes are made to the preseason, then Super Bowl weekend could potentially fall on President’s Day weekend.
It remains unclear whether there will be a vote on this matter next season with implementation beginning in 2026. However, one thing is certain – the topic of expanding the NFL season has gained significant traction this offseason and will likely continue to be discussed in future seasons as well.
