OLED Technology Revolutionizes Boeing’s Cabin Interiors: Partnership with LG Display and LIG Nex1

Boeing highlights the use of OLED technology panels in aircraft cabins

In 2020, Boeing, LG Display, and LIG Nex1 collaborated to develop innovative cabin interior applications using OLED display technologies. Led by Boeing Korea Engineering and Technology Center, the project aimed to adapt OLED technology for aerospace purposes. The companies showcased potential applications of OLED panels at the Aircraft Interiors Expo (AIX) in a galley design concept created by Boeing subsidiary EnCore Interiors.

The galley design concept featured a 1.4m (55in) OLED panel integrated into the entryway of a door monument and a curved OLED panel in the ceiling. Michael Sohn, Vice President of Commercial Operations at Boeing Encore Interiors, praised the advanced OLED screens for seamlessly blending into the cabin architecture, providing a modern aesthetic, and offering airlines the opportunity to enhance their brand identity and engage with passengers in new ways.

LG Display developed OLED panels specifically for aircraft use, while LIG Nex1 led the development of the smart divider control network and the software and hardware needed to operate transparent and curved OLED panel systems in an airplane environment with low power consumption and high efficiency. Boeing managing director Kelly Schable highlighted the unique requirements of using OLED panels in airplanes and emphasized how this collaboration could benefit airlines by providing new revenue opportunities through brand expression and passenger engagement.

As part of its next steps in developing these technologies, Boeing plans to conduct ground and flight testing on its ecoDemonstrator program this year. The collaboration among these companies aims to continue supporting Korean companies’ entry into the airplane interiors market based on this successful unveiling of OLED technology.

Boeing is constantly looking for innovative ways to improve cabin interiors for passengers. This collaboration with LG Display and LIG Nex1 is an exciting development that could revolutionize how we experience air travel.

In conclusion, Boeing has partnered with LG Display and LIG Nex1 since 2020 to develop innovative cabin interior applications using OLED display technologies. Their project aims to adapt OLED technology for aerospace purposes, resulting in seamless integration into cabin architecture while providing modern aesthetics that enhance brand identity and passenger engagement opportunities.

With this collaboration, Korean companies are better positioned to enter the airplane interiors market based on successful unveilings like this one. As part of their next steps, Boeing plans ground-based testing on its ecoDemonstrator program this year before conducting flight tests later on.

Overall, this partnership is an excellent example of how innovation can drive progress in industries like aviation.
