The NBA’s Fitness to Play Panel has cleared USC freshman basketball player Bronny James to participate in the combine, according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski and Jonathan Givony. James collapsed and experienced cardiac arrest during a workout with USC last July, resulting in a hospital stay and ICU treatment. He was diagnosed with a congenital heart defect and underwent surgery before returning to the USC lineup in December.
Following the NCAA season, James entered the transfer portal and declared for the NBA draft while maintaining his college eligibility. The 5-on-5 scrimmages at the combine will begin on Tuesday, with James expected to participate fully after being approved by the panel.
During his freshman season at USC, James played 23 games, averaging 4.8 points, 2.8 rebounds, and 2.3 assists per game. He is considered a solid player with potential for further development. With a May 29 deadline looming for him to decide whether to remain in the NBA draft or return to NCAA play, there is speculation that he may stay in the draft despite interest from his father LeBron James and potential suitors like the Los Angeles Lakers, who hold the 55th overall pick.
If another team drafts Bronny, it could lead to speculation about potential moves in the NBA free agent market as scouts and executives eagerly await his performance at the combine and how his skills will translate to NBA play on June 26-27 in Brooklyn, NY.
