On Sunday, Peres Jepchirchir, an Olympic champion, impressed the crowd at the London Marathon with her impressive sprint in the closing stages. She secured victory in the women’s elite race by crossing the finish line in 2:16:16, breaking the women’s only record of 2:17:01 set by Mary Keitany in 2017 by 45 seconds.
Tigst Assefa finished seven seconds behind Jepchirchir in second place and Joyciline Jepkosgei came in third. The race saw several changes as Olympic silver medallist Brigid Kosgei fell behind the leaders, leaving six women to establish themselves as the front group just after the halfway mark. However, Tigist Ketema and 2022 champion Yalemzeft Yehualaw were unable to keep up and a final group of four remained.
In the last kilometer, Alemu was unable to maintain the pace and Jepchirchir used her finishing kick to pull away from her competitors and secure a well-deserved win. Meanwhile, in the men’s elite race, Kenya’s Alexander Mutiso Munyao emerged victorious while Kenenisa Bekele finished second at 41 years old.
