George Pickens has been named the new No. 1 receiver for the Pittsburgh Steelers after the team traded away wide receiver Diontae Johnson in the offseason. This comes after an impressive season last year where Pickens led the team in receptions, receiving yards, and tied with Johnson for receiving touchdowns.
Pickens takes on an even larger leadership role on offense with Johnson now gone. He leads by example and prefers to show his teammates how to perform on the field rather than talking about it. This shift in leadership style may help him become a stronger leader for the team.
One of the reasons Johnson was traded away was due to issues with effort on the field, something that Pickens has also struggled with in the past. However, it is hoped that with this new role and an improved quarterback, Pickens will be able to play with more consistency and maturity.
During OTAs, Pickens stated, “I lead by example. Whatever I’m doing outside on the field I think the guys are gonna follow.” This shows his commitment to setting a positive example for his teammates and stepping up in his new role as the No. 1 receiver for the Steelers. With his talent and work ethic, Pickens has the potential to excel in this position and lead the team to success.
