Porto Players Celebrate Cup Victory, But Coach Sergio Conceicao Leaves the Club Amid Rumors of Joining French Club Marseille

Porto’s players celebrated their recent victory in the Portuguese Cup on May 26, 2024, by tossing coach Sergio Conceicao in the air. However, it was announced that Conceicao had left the club after seven years at the helm. Despite recently extending his contract, his departure was precipitated by the arrival of former Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur manager Andre Villas-Boas as club president.

Reports suggest that Conceicao, 49, may be joining French club Marseille, with his deputy Vitor Bruno rumored to be his possible replacement as Porto boss. During Conceicao’s tenure, Porto won 11 trophies, including three league titles in 2018, 2020, and 2022, along with the recent Portuguese Cup. However, their performance in his last campaign was disappointing, finishing third in the league.

Conceicao began his playing career at Porto 30 years ago and also played in Italy with Lazio, Parma, and Inter Milan. He retired from playing at Greek club PAOK in 2010 and began his coaching career as an assistant at Belgian club Standard Liege. He has also had coaching stints at various clubs, including Nantes in France before joining Porto in 2017.
