Record-Breaking Travel Awaits: Italian Tourists to Spend Over €2.5 Billion on Holidays in 2024

What is the projected holiday spending for Italians in 2024?

In 2024, Italians are expected to break travel records with a projected 29 million individuals planning to travel between June and September. The Confcommercio Tourism Observatory, in collaboration with Swg, conducted a study on 1,045 Italians aged between 18 and 80, representative of the population by gender, age, geographical area, and size of the municipality of residence.

According to the study, Italians will spend an average of 750 euros per capita in July, 910 euros in August, and 760 euros in September. The traveler confidence index for the Confcommercio Tourism Observatory is currently at 72 on a scale of 0 to 100. With potential record-breaking numbers in mind, this positive trend indicates a renewed interest in travel and spending for holidays.

The majority of Italians (more than 4 out of 10) will opt for hotels or holiday villages for their accommodations. However, an increasing number (14%) will choose second homes owned by friends or relatives for longer vacations. Preferences for B&Bs or short-term rentals vary based on the duration of the trip.

During the four-month period under review, it was found that more than half (58%) of Italian travelers plan to exclusively visit destinations within Italy. Tuscany remains a top choice for short and medium-term trips. Sardinia follows closely behind as a popular destination for longer vacations alongside Puglia and Trentino Alto Adige. Greek destinations like Greece are also attractive to Italian travelers during summer months.

Overall, the summer travel outlook for Italian tourists is promising with them showing renewed interest in exploring both domestic and international destinations alike.
