Optical tracking technology is being tested by the NFL during the preseason as a potential upgrade to its current method of measuring first downs. This technology has become increasingly common in sports, with tennis and soccer already utilizing similar systems. The traditional method of using bright orange sticks and a chain on the sidelines will still be used as a backup.
The United Football League has been using optical tracking technology through Tru Line Technology for some time now, but a full-time adoption in the NFL would be a significant change from the current method. Each stadium currently has a five-member chain crew to assist with measurements, but there have been some infamous moments where the stick-and-chain method failed, such as when the chains broke during the playoffs in 2023.
The NFL competition committee approved the use of optical tracking during the preseason, and testing has been done at various stadiums including Super Bowl LVIII in Las Vegas. If approved for the 2024 season, this technology would need to be implemented in all NFL stadiums. CBS Sports was the first to report on this potential upgrade in the NFL’s measurement system.
