Revolutionizing Texas Travel: TxDOT’s Technology Lane Conversion on US Highway 75

TxDOT to close section of U.S. Highway 75 for “Technology Lanes”

In an effort to reduce congestion during peak travel times, the Texas Department of Transportation (TxDOT) is undertaking a three-year project to convert existing HOV lanes on U.S. Highway 75 (Central Expressway) into “Technology Lanes.” The northbound lanes will undergo construction until the fall of 2025, with single-occupant vehicles allowed during non-peak times and HOVs, low-emission vehicles, and motorcycles catered to during rush hours.

The project is part of a $57 million initiative that includes restriping lanes, reconstructing barriers, installing dynamic message signs, overhead signs, and high-mast lighting. Pylons between the HOV lane and main lanes have already been removed in preparation for the technology lane conversion.

Peak hours for the technology lanes are defined as 7 to 9 a.m. southbound and 4 to 6 p.m. northbound. The project will be completed in portions known as “Rolls,” starting from I-635 to Highway 121. The exact timeline for each roll is not yet available, but closures will be updated on drivetexas.org for motorists to plan their routes accordingly. The completion date for the project is set for late 2026.
