Revolutionizing Urban Transportation: China Grants First-Ever License for Domestic eVTOL Flying Taxi

On March 7, the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC) granted a mass production license for the EH216-S, a domestic unmanned electric vertical take-off and landing (eVTOL) flying taxi model. This is the first such license issued globally in the eVTOL industry, signaling a significant step towards mass production and commercial operation of vehicles in this category. Developed and manufactured by EHang in Guangzhou, the EH216-S received type certificates and airworthiness certificates from the CAAC last year, according to CGTN.

The EH216-S is designed for various applications such as passenger transportation, sky tours, cargo transportation, and emergency care. It features a comprehensive mass production quality management system that covers all aspects of production, from raw materials to after-sales warranty. This system ensures that each aircraft and component leaving the manufacturing line meets design and safety standards. The vehicle has a maximum takeoff weight of 620 kg and can accommodate two passengers and luggage. It is equipped with eight foldable wings and 16 thrusters, allowing it to fly up to 30 km at a maximum speed of 130 km/h. The vehicle runs on green energy and features smart systems like flight control, battery management, and high-speed wireless network.

China has been actively promoting a low-altitude flight economy in recent years. In May 2024, the country will host the 8th World Drone Congress in Shenzhen city with the theme “Future low-altitude flight economy.” The congress will bring together nearly 500 domestic and foreign businesses to discuss emerging trends in drone technology and its potential applications in various industries like agriculture, logistics, search & rescue missions, etc.
