Rising Cases of Mpox in San Diego County: Health Officials Urge Vaccination for Summer Event Attendees

The Mpox virus is making a comeback in San Diego County, prompting health officials to urge the public to get vaccinated before attending large summer events. In May and June 2024, the county has reported seven cases of Mpox, which matches the number of new cases reported in Los Angeles during the same time period.

In recent years, San Diego County has recorded one or two new Mpox cases per month. Out of the recent cases, four were among individuals who had not received the vaccine. Dr. Ankita Kadakia, County Interim Public Health Officer, emphasized the importance of getting both doses of the JYNNEOS vaccine to protect against Mpox, especially with upcoming summer events that could contribute to its spread.

San Diego County experienced an outbreak of Mpox in 2022, primarily affecting individuals within the LGBTQ+ community. However, it’s important to note that Mpox can impact anyone as it can be transmitted through close physical contact. Symptoms of infection usually include rashes or sores that can last two to four weeks and may cause intense pain, especially in sensitive areas. Individuals with Mpox may also experience flu-like symptoms before rashes or sores appear.

The JYNNEOS vaccine is effective in protecting against Mpox and is available at county public health clinics. Individuals can also consult with their healthcare provider or visit myturn.ca.gov for assistance in finding the vaccine. According to the U.S Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), individuals who have received just one dose of JYNNEOS should get a second dose 28 days later for maximum protection against Mpox virus. If you have already missed that window by more than 28 days since receiving your first dose, it’s recommended to get a second dose as soon as possible to ensure full protection against this infectious disease.

It’s important for everyone who plans on attending any large summer event in San Diego County to get vaccinated with JYNNEOS vaccine beforehand as this will help prevent further spread of this infectious disease among people and reduce potential harm caused by this virus on those who are not vaccinated yet.
