Celebrate National Senior Health & Fitness Day with Us in Albuquerque!

Albuquerque, NM – In celebration of National Senior Health & Fitness Day, the Department of Senior Affairs and Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico will be hosting a free health event for adults 50 and over on Wednesday, May 29, 2024. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at North Domingo Baca Multigenerational Center.

Over 100,000 older adults in Albuquerque are expected to participate in local events as part of this nationwide initiative, which emphasizes the importance of regular exercise for maintaining health and independence in older adults. Mayor Tim Keller highlighted the importance of staying active to lead a healthy lifestyle, especially in a multigenerational community like Albuquerque.

Director of Senior Affairs Anna Sanchez mentioned that regular exercise is crucial for seniors’ overall health and well-being. The event aims to inspire seniors to take control of their health by providing them with access to resources that can benefit not only themselves but also their families.

Participants at the event will have the opportunity to join group exercise demonstrations such as tai chi, yoga, and dance, as well as attend a mini-health fair featuring various vendors offering information on healthy living practices. There will also be a climbing wall available for attendees to try out, along with health screenings and low-impact walking events that cater specifically to seniors’ needs.

Dr. Latha Shankar, Chief Medical Officer at Blue Cross and Blue Shield of New Mexico, stressed the importance of physical activity for leading a healthy lifestyle and maintaining good overall health throughout one’s life span. Their partnership with the City of Albuquerque highlights their commitment to supporting the wellness needs of senior citizens in New Mexico’s largest city.
