In a golden age for men’s discus throw, Mykolas Alekna finds himself competing against some of the best in the world. The competition has reached new heights in recent years with multiple athletes breaking the 67m mark at the World Championships final for the first time ever. In 2023, the field included five athletes who had thrown over 70m, setting the stage for intense competition.
As the new all-time number one, Alekna faces tough competition from reigning world champion Daniel Ståhl of Sweden. Ståhl, who is also the defending Olympic champion, set a World Championships record of 71.46m in the previous year. Another standout athlete is Slovenia’s Kristjan Ceh, who won the world title in 2022 with a throw of 71.13m, setting a Championships record at the time.
Joining these top athletes are Alex Rose of Samoa and Lukas Weißhaidinger of Austria, both of whom have also achieved throws over 70m. The level of competition in men’s discus throw is at an all-time high, pushing Alekna to continuously strive for greatness.
Looking towards the future, Alekna has the opportunity to make history at the Paris 2024 Olympics. If he can secure a gold medal, he would become part of the first father-son duo to both win gold in the same individual athletics event at the Olympic Games. This feat has only been achieved once before by Charlie and Chip Jenkins in the men’s 4x400m relay, representing the USA in 1956 and 1992, respectively. With
