Rochester Adams golf and Novi Detroit Catholic Central wrestling were named the Boys and Girls Teams of the Year at the 2024 Detroit High School Sports Awards. The event, presented by Detroit Area Honda Dealers and in partnership with the U.S. Army, took place at The Fillmore and recognized over 300 student-athletes from the Detroit Metro area and surrounding counties. USA TODAY Sports sponsored the Teams of the Year categories, with finalists including Southfield A&T football, Orchard Lake St. Mary’s basketball, Romeo cross country, and Farmington Hills Mercy volleyball.
The Rochester Adams golf team had an outstanding season on the course, winning their fifth OAA Red League title and securing back-to-back state championships by beating runner-up Brighton. They achieved 12 top-five finishes and went undefeated at 25-0 over the past five years in Oakland Activities Association Red duel matches. Additionally, all five seniors were recognized as Academic All-State team members, highlighting their excellence both on and off the course.
On the other hand, Novi Detroit Catholic Central wrestling has established itself as a dominant force in high school sports in Detroit. Winning their 17th state championship this year, they claimed their second consecutive title under coach Mitch Hancock with a perfect 50-0 season record. The Shamrocks captured national attention, ranked as high as number 22 in the country by FloWrestling. Darius Marines was named Wrestler of the Year for his outstanding performance during the tournament where he won five events for his fourth individual crown.
The event honored over 300 student-athletes from schools across Michigan’s metropolitan area and neighboring counties for their achievements in various sports such as football, basketball, cross country running, volleyball among many others.
