Roses: Tips and Tricks for a Successful Garden

Roses are one of the most popular flowers in the world, and with good reason. They come in a variety of colors and are easy to care for, as long as you know what you’re doing. Christina Moritz, the owner of “Flowers from Hühnersteig” in the 14th district, has been growing roses for years and has some great tips on how to keep them healthy and thriving.

One of the most common issues with roses is drooping flowers. According to Moritz, this can be caused by either dryness or over-watering. To avoid issues like leaf burn from strong sunlight combined with water, it’s best to water your roses in the morning. Additionally, keeping the foliage dry in the evening can help prevent fungal diseases from developing.

Newly planted roses need thorough watering throughout the summer in dry weather, while well-rooted rose bushes can tolerate dryness and heat well. To prevent waterlogging, Moritz recommends planting roses in pots with drainage holes or a drainage layer. The pots should be slightly larger than the root ball and deep, as roses have deep roots. Regular loosening of compacted soil is also essential to ensure healthy growth.

Using a good substrate and regular fertilization can keep a rose plant thriving in a pot for several years without needing to be repotted. However, repotting is still recommended from time to time to promote healthy growth. If you have any questions about pruning your roses or caring for your orchids, you can send them along with a photo of your plant to [email protected] with the subject line “Gardener question.” Your questions will be forwarded to an expert, and the answers will be presented in upcoming issues. This is a great opportunity to get personalized advice for your plants from experienced professionals.
