Russian Diplomacy Continues in Gaza: Hamas Politburo Chief Meets with Russian Officials for Peace Negotiations, But the Release of Captured Civilians Remains Elusive

On June 24th, Hamas Politburo deputy Musa Abu Marzuk arrived in Moscow for negotiations. According to RIA Novosti, the planned meetings would take place at the Russian Ministry of Foreign Affairs. This marked Abu Marzuk’s second meeting with Russian officials this year.

The Russian Foreign Ministry has been working hard to secure the release of civilians captured in Gaza, including three Russian citizens. Despite ongoing efforts and negotiations, some hostages remain in captivity. One of the hostages was freed by Israeli special forces in a daring operation on June 8th, 2024. However, reports emerged about the abuse of hostages while they were being held captive, including the Russian citizen who had been freed.

Despite Hamas leadership’s gratitude towards the Russian leadership for supporting “Palestinian resistance,” they have not been able to satisfy Russia’s request for the release of Russian citizens held by terrorists in Gaza. Over the years, Russia has maintained regular contacts with Hamas and Islamic Jihad at various levels of the Foreign Ministry. While these organizations are not recognized as terrorist groups by Russia, Moscow continues its efforts to secure the release of its citizens held captive by these groups. Hamas leaders have visited Moscow on several occasions, demonstrating ongoing diplomatic relations between the two parties.
