Shoigu set to assume role as Secretary of Russia’s Security Council

Russian President Vladimir Putin has appointed Andrei Belousov as the Minister of Defense, according to the Federal Council. Belousov, who previously served as the First Deputy Prime Minister, will replace Sergei Shoigu in this role. Shoigu, the current Minister of Defense, will transition to become the Secretary of the Security Council, taking over from Nikolai Patrushev.

Shoigu has held the position of Minister of Defense since 2012 and has been involved in several international conflicts and military operations. During his tenure, Russia annexed Crimea, became involved in conflicts in Ukraine and Syria, deployed peacekeeping troops to Nagorno Karabakh, and launched a large-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
