Russia’s Use of Chemical Warfare and Tear Gas in Ukraine: Denials Meet Evidence, Sanctions Response

The Kremlin has rejected allegations that Russian troops used chemical warfare agents and tear gas against Ukrainians, stating that these claims are “baseless.” However, evidence suggests otherwise.

According to reports from Ukrainian soldiers, Russian forces have been using chloropicrin, a banned chemical warfare agent under the Convention on the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons, as well as conventional tear gas to drive Ukrainians from their positions. The use of tear gas for military purposes is prohibited under the Chemical Weapons Convention.

The symptoms caused by the use of these agents include a burning sensation in the eyes, nose, and throat, followed by shortness of breath and nausea. Reports suggest that Russian troops have increased their use of tear gas attacks in recent months, dropping gas grenades from drones over Ukrainian trenches. In response, the Ukrainian army has started distributing gas masks and conducting special exercises to prepare for these attacks.

The American State Department has accused Russia of disregarding its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention and has imposed further sanctions against Russian entities involved in chemical and biological weapons programs. These sanctions target three state entities and four Russian companies supporting these programs.

In conclusion, it is clear that Russian troops have been using chemical warfare agents and tear gas against Ukrainians to drive them from their positions. While Russia denies these allegations, evidence suggests otherwise. The United States has responded by imposing new sanctions against Moscow and accusing Russia of disregarding its obligations under the Chemical Weapons Convention.
