Salt Lake City Considering Proposal to Revitalize Downtown with Sports and Entertainment District

Proposal for Major Face-Lift for SLC’s Delta Center in Sports District

The Salt Lake City Council is considering a proposal to establish a sports and entertainment district that would provide a refreshed entrance to the Delta Center. Smith Entertainment Group (SEG) executive Mike Maughan presented the vision for the district during a recent council meeting. The plan includes the construction of a new arena entrance leading to a plaza, as well as renovations to the Delta Center, which are set to begin in April of next year.

Maughan emphasized the importance of creating gathering spaces for the community and ensuring benefits for residents, even if they do not purchase tickets to events held in the district. SEG has committed to investing over $3 billion of its own money into the project, which will be built on two blocks east of the Delta Center. The funding for this ambitious project will come from an increase in Salt Lake City’s sales tax by half a percentage point.

The proposed sports and entertainment district aims to revitalize downtown Salt Lake City and create a dynamic space for residents and visitors alike. With plans for a new plaza, residential tower, hotel, and renovated entrance to the Delta Center, this hub could transform into an entertainment centerpiece that attracts people from all over town.
