Scarlett Johansson Joins Gareth Edwards-Directed Jurassic World Reboot at Universal: A Fresh Start for a Classic Franchise

Scarlett Johansson, a two-time Oscar nominee, is in talks to join the Gareth Edwards-directed Jurassic World reboot at Universal. The news of her involvement in the project has been circulating for some time now, and it appears to be quite solid. This new endeavor puts Johansson in business with another major movie franchise, following her Black Widow days at Marvel.

Johansson’s time at Marvel resulted in the star suing Disney over the 2021 pandemic release of that movie, which the studio decided to release day-and-date on Disney+, ultimately impacting box office grosses. However, the two sides were able to settle their differences.

Universal is moving quickly to assemble the project for a July 2, 2025 release. David Koepp, who adapted the first Jurassic Park from Michael Crichton’s classic novel, is penning the latest iteration of Jurassic World. The new movie is a fresh take on the Jurassic era, but cast members from previous Jurassic World films, such as Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard, are not expected to return. Original trilogy actors Jeff Goldblum, Laura Dern, and Sam Neill are also not expected to make a comeback.

Jurassic World will be executive produced by Steven Spielberg through Amblin Entertainment, with Frank Marshall and Patrick Crowley producing through Kennedy-Marshall. EVP Production Development Sara Scott and Creative Executive of Production Development Jacqueline Garell are overseeing the production at Universal. The Jurassic Park franchise is over 30 years old and has grossed $5.67 billion at the global box office. The original 1993 film directed by Spielberg was followed by two sequels: The Lost World (1997) and Jurassic Park III (2001). In 2015, Universal revived the franchise with Jurassic World and continued with Fallen Kingdom (2018) and Dominion (2022).

Johansson has had an impressive career in Hollywood since her breakout role in Lost in Translation in 2003. She has since appeared in numerous blockbuster films such as Iron Man 2 (2010), Captain America: Winter Soldier (2014), Avengers: Endgame (2019), and most recently Black Widow (2021) where she starred as Natasha Romanoff/Black Widow for which she was nominated for Best Actress for Netflix’s Marriage Story
