Shaping the Future of Croatian Craftsmanship: The Importance of Quality Curricula and Work-Based Learning

HOK emphasizes the importance of apprenticeship in training new craftsmen

The Croatian Chamber of Crafts (HOK) has highlighted the importance of quality curricula for craft occupations in shaping the future of domestic crafts. They emphasized the need for learning based on work to ensure the development of skilled craftsmen in Croatia. HOK provided feedback on the curricula for vocational occupations, supporting the introduction of new curricula, modernization of vocational education, and strengthening work-based learning as a key component of quality vocational education.

The HOK insisted that work-based training should be conducted by apprentices with a licensed employer, with at least half of the qualification points obtained in a real work environment. They also called for clear information on the scientific exam as part of the defense of the final thesis, highlighting the importance of apprenticeship regulations and the inclusion of apprenticeship programs for professions like beautician and hairdresser.

Dalibor Kratohvil, President of HOK, emphasized the value of work-based learning in craft workshops for young craftsmen. He highlighted the importance of passing on craft heritage and creating skilled new generations of Croatian craftsmen. Craftsmanship is seen as a growing force, with an increase in interest in craft occupations and enrollment in vocational programs.

In the school year 2023/2024, 4,524 students are enrolled in JMO programs, reflecting a slight increase compared to previous years. The enrollment policy is evolving to meet recommendations and increase quotas for trade profession enrollment. The positive trend in interest in craft occupations and enrollment in vocational programs showcases the importance of hands-on, work-based learning in shaping the future of Croatian craftsmanship.

Craftsmanship is becoming increasingly popular among young people who want to develop their skills and pursue careers that require creativity and attention to detail. As such, there has been an increase in interest in trade professions like carpentry, masonry, metalworking, woodworking, and other related fields.

To cater to this growing demand for skilled workers, stakeholders have collaborated to create more opportunities for young people to learn practical skills through apprenticeship programs. These programs provide students with real-world experience working alongside experienced professionals who can guide them through every step of their training.

As a result, more students are now enrolling in trade professions than ever before. This trend is expected to continue as more young people recognize the value that practical skills can bring to their careers.

In conclusion, high-quality curricula are essential for shaping future generations
