West Indies Squad Announced for 2024 T20 World Cup, featuring Shimron Hetmyer and Shamar Joseph

The West Indies has announced their 15-man squad for the 2024 T20 World Cup, with Shimron Hetmyer making a comeback after missing his flight to the 2022 tournament. The squad also includes surprise inclusion Shamar Joseph, a fast bowler who has played only three T20 matches and has yet to make his international debut in the format. Alzarri Joseph has been named deputy captain to Rovman Powell, with Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, and Jason Holder also making the team.

West Indies coach Daren Sammy confirmed that Sunil Narine, despite his outstanding form in the IPL, remains retired from internationals. Sammy also mentioned requesting the BCCI to release West Indies players from the ongoing IPL as soon as possible. Shamar Joseph, known for his seven-wicket haul in a historic Test win at the Gabba, is one of the players at the IPL. Despite a difficult start in the league, he has been selected for the T20 World Cup squad.

The West Indies will be in Group C alongside teams like Papua New Guinea, Uganda, New Zealand, and Afghanistan. Their first two matches are scheduled to be held in Providence, Guyana against PNG and Uganda followed by a match against New Zealand at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad. Their final group game will be against Afghanistan in St Lucia.

The West Indies squad for this tournament includes Rovman Powell as captain and Alzarri Joseph as vice-captain along with other talented players such as Johnson Charles, Roston Chase, Brandon King, Shai Hope, Romario Shepherd Akeal Hosein Gudakesh Motie Sherfane Rutherford among others. With an exciting lineup of players and a strong team dynamic they are looking forward to performing on a global stage.
