Two young skiers tragically lost their lives after falling from a mountain in northern Italy. The unfortunate incident happened to 27-year-old World Cup competitor Jean Daniel Pession and his girlfriend, 26-year-old skiing instructor Elisa Arlian. Pession was a member of the Italian national speed skiing team and fell from a spot near the summit of Monte Zerbion in the Alps.
Despite efforts by recovery crews, it took several hours to locate the pair, who were still connected by a safety rope used by mountaineers during climbs. The circumstances surrounding the fall are not yet clear, but both Pession and Arlian fell nearly 2,300 feet from the mountain.
The Italian Winter Sports Federation expressed deep sympathy over the tragic accident, noting Pession’s achievements in the World Cup competitions. He ranked 15th and 22nd in two separate events. Officials with the federation and local government in Aosta Valley publicly mourned the deaths and extended condolences to the families of Pession and Arlian. President Flavio Roda and the entire Federation expressed their sympathy for the Pession family, while the Regional Council of Aosta Valley acknowledged the tragedy as a moment of profound sadness.
