Song Cau Phu Yen Lobster Tragedy: 60 Tons of Blue Lobsters Perish due to Heat and Overcrowding

Unusual Death of Over 60 Tons of Phu Yen Lobsters

Recently, over 60 tons of blue lobsters perished in Song Cau Phu Yen, causing a significant loss for local farmers. The Phu Yen Fisheries Department reported that as of May 20, approximately 61 tons of blue lobsters and nearly 30 tons of farmed fish from 160 households had died. In Vinh Hoa village alone, over 1,300 shrimp and fish cages were completely wiped out, resulting in more than 53 tons of lobsters and 28.6 tons of fish dying.

Local authorities suspect that the sudden deaths may be due to a combination of hot weather and heavy thunderstorms. However, the excessive amount of shrimp farming in the area may have also contributed to the lack of oxygen, leading to mass mortality. Samples have been collected for testing to determine the exact cause of death.

Traders have stepped in to help farmers by purchasing affected lobsters at discounted rates. Companies like Thanh Nhon Seafood and General Trading Company bought nearly 8 tons of lobsters from farmers to prevent further losses. By supporting these farmers, traders aim to mitigate financial impact and prevent waste.
